MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
The Ethiopian Veterinary Association (EVA) is celebrating its 50 th Anniversary, joined up with its 37 th Annual Conference, at the African Union, Mandella Hall, on October 17 th and 18 th , 2024. Preparations are underway to commemorate our Golden Jubilee establishing a core committee and sub-committees.
The theme for EVA’s 50th anniversary is One Health, One Welfare, One Planet. At this juncture, while reflecting on our tremendous accomplishments and honouring our professional fathers, it is critical to consider the evolving role of the veterinary profession in the next era, 50 years, 2074, in light of the next generation of veterinary professionals.

She has been based in Addis Ababa since 2018 at the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), where she holds a joint appointment. Prior to this she held appointments at the University of Sydney in Australia and Tufts University in the US. Dr Siobhan is an interdisciplinary researcher and epidemiologist with a dual background in veterinary medicine and public health. She has more than 15 years of experience promoting One Health approaches, with an emphasis on capacity building and translating concepts into practical implementation, particularly in the African context. This includes:
• as global health advisor for the RESPOND project (part of USAID’s Emerging Pandemic Threats program) which aimed to strengthen capacity for response to emerging diseases in disease “hotspots”;
• as Research Lead for the Ethiopia hub of the HORN project which aimed to strengthen capacity for One Health research in the Horn of Africa region;
• as ILRI-PI for the HEAL project which aims to strengthen human-animal-rangeland health service delivery in pastoralist areas of Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia;
• Ethiopia and Somalia country lead for the COHESA project which aims to increase uptake and adoption of One Health solutions in eastern and southern Africa.

In Cambridge he has worked on the various methods for the scientific assessment of animal welfare and the management, housing and transport of farm animals, especially cattle, pigs, sheep, poultry and farmed fish in relation to their welfare. A series of studies of cognition and feelings in domestic animals have also been carried out. There have been studies of pet animal, zoo animal and laboratory animal housing and management as well as olfactory discrimination, communication, learning, cognition, behaviour problems in pets and the effects of pets on their owners. Aspects of wild animal welfare have also been studied. During its 27 years, CAWA has produced 25 books and 686 scientific papers, 462 refereed. Broom has written or co-authored nine books and 431 scientific papers, 299 refereed. Work on national and international committees is described under “Experience”. Other work has included: external examiner for 62 Ph.D. degrees in 10 countries and 4 languages, 404 invited lectures given in 43 countries, over 30 appearances in court as an expert witness. over 20 consultancy reports written.
