Jemere Bekele Harito
Jemere was born on 22nd December, 1966 in Masha, Sheka zone, Southwest Ethiopia Regional State. After completing his primary and secondary education, he earned a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree in 1992 from Addis Ababa University, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.
He began his career as a field veterinarian in 1993 and quickly rose through the ranks, serving in various leadership positions within the agricultural sector of Sheka and Kafa-Sheka zones. In 2002, he returned to Addis Ababa University for a Master’s degree in Tropical Veterinary Epidemiology. After completing his MSc in 2004, he taught at Haramaya University and Hawassa University, where he was promoted to Associate Professor in 2010. In 2014, he pursued a PhD degree in Parasitology at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences, which he completed in 2017. Upon returning to Ethiopia, he continued to serve as an associate Professor of Parasitology. On 29th October 2023 he was promoted to a rank of full professor in Veterinary Parasitology. Throughout his career, Prof. Jemere has made significant contributions to teaching, research, and community services.
Sefinew Alemu Mekonnen
He joined Addis Ababa University, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in 1993 and graduated with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 1999. After six years of work as a veterinary practitioner and a veterinary officer for the Amhara region Bureau of Agriculture in North Wollo zone, he joined Addis Ababa University and pursued MSc degree in Veterinary Microbiology in 2007. He pursued his PhD in Veterinary Epidemiology and Animal Health Economics at the Department of Farm Animal Health, Utrecht University, the Netherlands .
He joined University of Gondar Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Department of Veterinary Clinical Medicine as an Assistant Professor. He served the department for six in teaching and research. He was promoted to the rank of Associate Professor in 2012. He served the University of Gondar in his capacity as an instructor, a researcher, and department head and coordinator of postgraduate programs. He also coordinated grants/projects out of the University of Gondar. Sefinew has conducted collaborative research activities and published a number of research articles. With his collaborators in and out of the country and with his students, he has published more than 45 articles in international journals. In 2015, Dr. Sefinew received the Gustav Rosenberger Memorial Fund award for his outstanding research plan at the European College of Bovine Health Management (ECBHM) conference in Maribor, Slovenia. Dr. Sefinew Alemu has advised a number of DVM and MSc students. Currently, he is supervising six PhD students. Although his main area of research is the Epidemiology and economic impacts of diseases affecting food animals and zoonotic diseases, he is a multidisciplinary researcher. For instance, he has excellent experience using the Theory of Planned Behavior from social psychology to study dairy farmers’ behavior and is doing research with people from management, education, psychology, etc. Considering his outstanding accomplishments in teaching, research, administration and community services, the Senate of the University of Gondar, in its meeting on August 1, 2024, awarded Dr. Sefinew to a rank of Full Professor. His promotion to Full Professor was endorsed by the Board of Administration of the University of Gondar.
Tadesse Eguale
Tadesse Eguale was born in Jeldu district, West Showa zone of Oromia Region and went to Elementary and secondary education at Gojo town and joined Ginchi High School for high school education. He then joined Addis Ababa University Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Got his DVM in 1995. He has served as a Field veterinarian in the Jimma Zone of the Oromiya Region in Sigmo Setema and Omo Nada district for four years and then joined the then National Animal Health Research Institute and current Animal Health Institute.
He then pursued his MSc in Pharmacology at the College of Health Sciences, Addis Ababa University, and Joined the National Animal Health Research Institute and served there for about four years later, moved to Aklilu Lemma Institute of Pathobiology, Addis Ababa University, at the rank of Assistant Professor. He then joined Addis Ababa University School of Pharmacy for his PhD. He got PhD fellowship from The Ohio State University. He did part of his PhD research at the Ohio State University for one and a half years. He received another PhD fellowship from Biosciences Eastern and Central Africa, International Livestock Research Institute for nine months. He completed his PhD research focusing on Salmonella and antimicrobial resistance and successfully defended his PhD dissertation in 2016.
Prof. Tadesse’s research focuses on the epidemiology and characterization of various bacterial pathogens and antimicrobial resistance, which is a testament to his expertise in these areas. His involvement in teaching MSc and PhD courses in Tropical and Infectious Diseases at Aklilu Lemma Institute of Pathobiology and his academic, research, and community service engagement led to his promotion to the rank of Associate Professor in 2017. He has secured several research grants from various international and local funding sources and has supervised numerous MSc and PhD students, further demonstrating his expertise and commitment to the field.
Prof. Tadesse’s involvement in various professional and community services, including serving as Assistant Editor and Editor-in-Chief of the Ethiopian Veterinary Journal and his membership in different Professional Associations, has been significant. His successful academic, research, and community services led to his promotion to the rank of full Professor in Microbiology by the Addis Ababa University Senate and Board in November 2023. This promotion is a testament to his academic and professional success. Professor Tadesse has published over 80 papers in reputable local and international journals and presented his research works at international and national conferences in the form of oral and poster presentations.
