Hagos Ashenafi (Prof.)

Prof. Hagos Ashenafi was born on January 27, 1976 at a place called Bedelle, Illuababor in western Ethiopia. He did elementary and high school level education at Addis Ababa in Hibret Ferie and Yekatit 12 schools, respectively. Later he joined Addis Ababa University, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and graduated with DVM degree in the year 2000. He worked as field veterinarian in Kolla Tembien district of central zone of Tigray from August 2000 to April 2001. In May 2001, he was recruited by Addis Ababa University, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine as academic staff in the Department of Pathology and Parasitology with the academic rank of Assistant Lecturer. In 2004, he joined the graduate program of Addis Ababa University at the same faculty and received Master of Science (MSc) degree in Tropical Veterinary Medicine. In the year 2010, he earned his PhD degree in Bioscience Engineering from Katholike University of Leuven, Belgium. Over the last 18 years of his professional journey, he served the livestock sector at various capacities, including field veterinarian, faculty instructor, department head, associate dean for graduate programs, researcher and researcher adviser. He has been contracted by among others, Ministry of Agriculture, Addis Ababa University, VLIR-UOS and VLIR-TEAM Belgian Projects and FAO- ECTAD.

Prof. Hagos’ research mainly focuses on parasitic diseases affecting livestock. In this connection, he isolated, characterized and reported the presence of Trypanosmoa equiperdium of Dodola isolate in horses suffering from clinical Dourine from Arsi-Bale highlands of Oromia, Ethiopia for the first time in his PhD work. Prof. Hagos also involved in the research of traditional herbal medicine for the control of ectoparasites in animals. At the end of the research Prof. Hagos and other researchers granted a Utility Model Certificate of the Intellectual Property Right from the Ethiopian Intellectual Property Office. Currently, he is working on parasitic diseases with special emphasis on trypanosomosis as a continuum of his achievement. Prof. Hagos has authored and co-authored over 60 research articles in national and international peer reviewed journals. In order to ensure the quality of training and research, he has been able to attract considerable funding and bring professors from renowned universities. Addis Ababa University being fully satisfied with the dedicated services and commendable contributions made by Prof. Hagos Ashenafi the Board of Governors of the University approved the promotion to the rank of Professor of Veterinary Parasitology effective January 16, 2019.
